What is it?

Red Light Therapy is a treatment that uses low-level wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to naturally stimulate cellular function. Unlike heat-based therapies, red light doesn’t warm the air or your body—instead, it penetrates deep into the skin and tissue to support healing, reduce inflammation, and improve skin tone. For example, you’ll feel relaxed under the light without getting hot, but your cells are working hard behind the scenes to recharge and repair.

Why do it?

Red Light Therapy works at the cellular level to help your body heal, restore, and perform at its best. The specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light stimulate mitochondria (the energy powerhouses of your cells), which can lead to reduced inflammation, quicker recovery, and enhanced overall wellness.

Unlike therapies that rely on heat or sweat, red light works deep below the surface to promote skin rejuvenation, muscle repair, joint support, and even mood improvement. It’s especially beneficial for those with chronic pain, skin concerns, fatigue, or inflammation—and best of all, it’s safe, gentle, and non-invasive. A few minutes under the light can leave you feeling refreshed and recharged from the inside out.

Benefits

According to Healthline and the Cleveland Clinic:

Cellular Repair & Anti-Inflammatory Effects: Red light therapy stimulates energy production in cells (mitochondria), which can help reduce inflammation, promote healing, and support overall cellular function.

Pain Relief: Studies have shown that red light therapy may help reduce chronic pain, joint stiffness, and muscle soreness. It’s often used to manage symptoms of arthritis, tendinitis, and nerve-related pain.

Skin Health: Red light therapy is widely recognized for improving skin tone and texture. It can reduce fine lines, wrinkles, acne, and scarring by promoting collagen production and increasing blood flow.

Mood & Energy: Exposure to red light has been linked to improved mood and reduced symptoms of depression, especially during seasonal changes. It may also help combat fatigue by improving mitochondrial performance in the body’s cells.

Wound Healing & Recovery: Red light can accelerate the body’s natural healing process, making it a helpful therapy for injuries, surgical recovery, and even wound healing.

Sleep Support: Because red light helps regulate circadian rhythm and promotes relaxation, many users report improved sleep quality with consistent use.

Red light therapy is gentle, non-invasive, and safe for regular use—making it a powerful addition to any wellness routine.

How to use it

  • Red Light Therapy Use

    • Hydration: While red light therapy doesn’t cause sweating like a sauna, it’s still a good idea to be hydrated beforehand to support optimal cellular function.

    • Clothing: Wear light, loose-fitting clothing or expose the area you want to target. For best results, red light should shine directly on bare skin.

    • Length of Time: Sessions typically last between 10–20 minutes, depending on the device and treatment area. At IOME, your red light therapy runs while you relax in the massage chair, maximizing comfort and effectiveness.

    • What to Do During Your Session: Sit back in the massage chair and allow your body to fully relax. This is a great time to breathe deeply, meditate, or simply rest.

    • Frequency: For best results, 3–5 sessions per week are recommended. Regular use is key to seeing long-term benefits for skin health, inflammation, and recovery.

    Concerns

Speak with your physician if you have any health conditions or concerns before starting red light therapy—especially if you have a history of photosensitivity, are pregnant, or are taking medications that increase light sensitivity.

Red light therapy is generally safe, non-invasive, and well-tolerated, but it’s always best to check in with your healthcare provider if you’re unsure. Avoid staring directly into the light source and follow all usage guidelines for your safety and comfort.
