I graduated with my Bachelors in Social Work in 2003 from the University of Central Florida, and my Masters in Social Work in 2004 from East Carolina University. I've always had a passion for helping others. While working toward my clinical license, I worked with traumatized children and their families by conducting family assessments and individualized strength-based interventions to promote healing and connections within the family unit.
I continued my professional development working alongside traumatized children and adults in various non-profits. My experience grew, integrating art, movement, mindfulness, and sensory-based approaches—connecting the mind, body, and spirit.
All of these laid the foundation for my growing desire to help others explore their values and live an authentic life filled with self-compassion. I often witness conflict arise when a person’s experiences are not aligned with their core values. This often leads to feelings of worthlessness, doubt, and uncertainty.
I love learning and it never stops! I am currently pursuing a certification in Intuitive Eating to assist people in breaking free from the anxiety, guilt, and shame triggered by poor body confidence and the diet culture. This evidence based model teaches you how to listen to your body, eat when you are physically hungry and stop when you are satisfied. This sounds like a simple concept to follow, but more often than not, we are taught to follow strict food rules that override our internal cues.
….you can only eat so many calories
….you can’t have too many carbs
….it is too late to eat
….you better finish your plate
These compounded messages create a significant internal dialogue that can contribute to feelings of anxiety, worthlessness, shame, and guilt. The diet culture has a significant impact on a person's mental health, especially how they think and feel about themselves, and I am looking forward to furthering my knowledge and experience in this area and sharing it with others.
